Visamo is a pair of photographs of a leafless tree standing quietly against an open sky, with birds resting on its branches before continuing on their way. Photographed by Nishit Jariwala in Dang, Gujarat, in November 2013, the photographs find something gentle in this simple meeting of a tree and passing birds.
The Gujarati word વિસામો means a pause, a place to rest, a moment of respite. The tree offers its branches without asking anything in return. The birds arrive, stay for a while, and leave when it is time. Nothing is held back, and nothing is asked to remain.
Perhaps some people, places, and moments in our lives are like that too. They come into our lives not to become our destination, but simply to give us a little rest along the way. We stay for a while, gather ourselves, and eventually continue on our own journey.
A visāmo is not where the journey ends. It is simply the place that gives us the strength to continue.
