Significance of Ganesh Chaturthi
Ganesh Chaturthi marks the birth of Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles and the harbinger of wisdom, prosperity, and auspicious beginnings. It is one of the most loved Hindu festivals, bringing together devotion, culture, and community spirit.
Historically, it gained prominence through the initiatives of leaders who encouraged public celebrations, turning it into a festival that unites people across social and cultural boundaries. The farewell immersion of the idol, Ganesh Visarjan, symbolizes the cycle of creation and dissolution, teaching detachment and the impermanence of life.
Rituals & Traditions
1. Pranapratishtha (Installation)
The idol is installed during the Madhyahna Muhurat. The altar is decorated with flowers, durva grass, and sacred items before performing the Pranapratishtha ritual to invoke the deity’s presence.
2. Daily Worship
Devotees chant mantras like “Om Gam Ganapataye Namah”, perform aarti, and offer modaks, durva, and flowers every morning and evening throughout the festival.
3. Moon Sighting Prohibition
On Ganesh Chaturthi, it is believed that the moon should not be sighted to avoid Mithya Dosha. If accidentally seen, specific mantras are recited as remedies.
4. Cultural Celebrations
The festival includes devotional singing, dance, community pandals, and cultural programs that continue until the day of immersion.
